B-Skill really did put Sam Bell in the shop window to land her a job and here she is at the Ethel Austin Blyth store with manageress Jill Sears and B-Skill's Mark Dickinson looking on.
Sam Bell really had no idea what kind of job she might enjoy until B-Skill literally put her in the shop window. The 17-year-old from Cramlington had thought about working in child care but could not find a vacancy. So she signed up for the entry to employment (e2e) programme at the new B-Skill Training Centre in Blyth.
Within a week she'd been found a work placement at the Ethel Austin shop in the town centre. And she impressed the management there so much that, in less than a month, she was offered a full time job.
"I absolutely love it. There's nothing I need to do which I don't enjoy and everyone has made me feel very welcome," said Sam, who has now started a 15 month apprenticeship training programme: "I had no idea it would be so much fun and I can't thank B-Skill or Ethel Austin enough for helping me get this start to working life."
Manager at the shop in Blyth, Jill Sears, said: "As a company we offer work placements to people like Sam to give them an opportunity to show what they can do and she's certainly grasped it with both hands. She's very punctual, diligent, eager to learn and enthusiastic. We had no hesitation in offering her a role with us."
B-Skill opened its training centre at Blyth in November and already more than a dozen young people have been signed up for life skills training and work placements
The hope is that this experience will lead to jobs, as youth and community skills tutor, Mark Dickinson, explained: "Our aim is to reach young people whose qualifications on leaving school might make finding work a challenge. We can assess their skills, provide some training and then place them with an employer to gain real work experience.
"We're involved in the development of the young people of the region and we want to introduce them to the organisations that are investing in the development of the region. Sam is a great example of what can be achieved and we're sure she will make a real success of her apprenticeship. We're delighted to have been able to engineer an opportunity which she never thought she'd get."
