Train to Gain Success StoryDated: 10/01/2008

When New Rush Hall School decided to put together a training programme for their Caretaking team, B-Skill Ltd were able to use funding from Train to Gain to make it happen. Now in helping the learners complete the NVQ Level 2 in Caretaking qualification,

B-Skill Ltd is a national training provider, originally established in 2000 in Newcastle upon Tyne. Due to the excellence in training provision and consultancy to the support service industry, B-Skill Ltd are one of the leading providers in the country as named by the Adult Learning Inspectorate. With a local office based in Waltham Forest, training is now available throughout the whole of the London region.

Train to Gain is a government funding stream that offers employers the training they need to succeed. New Rush Hall School first heard about Train to Gain through B-Skill Ltd and were very keen to explore the opportunity to further develop their staff. After discussing Train to Gain and the content of the programme with an advisor from B-Skill Ltd, The New Rush Hall School put forward two candidates Michael Dunn and John Swyers for training. A detailed training needs analysis was conducted with each learner and an entirely flexible in-house delivery schedule was agreed with B-Skill assessor Eric Oguama-Richards.

BS Retail 1Of the B-Skill assessor Eric Oguama-Richards, Michael Dunn said; "Eric was a really helpful and understanding assessor. After doing this job for over twenty years, he still taught me ways of doing areas of my job more efficiently. He helped me with health and safety knowledge and showed me ways that I can always be up to date on new rules and regulations."

John Swyers added; "I didn't realise how much is actually involved. The training helped me become generally more aware and highlighted the everyday dangers, which is of vital importance particularly when working with children."

The New Rush Hall School offers education, support and guidance to youngsters who have behavioural, emotional and social difficulties. The school was granted Trailblazer Specialist School status in September 2005.

Pauline Puddicombe, the school's Business Manager said; "We believe we are fortunate to employ a committed team of staff and are always keen to develop existing skills to enhance school improvement. The opportunity for our Caretakers to participate in the B-Skill programme in NVQ Caretaking helped us to demonstrate this commitment to all staff development and emphasised the value of the work of the premises staff. The Caretakers perform a vital role in school life and without their services the school would not run efficiently. The course has helped our Caretakers gain a better insight into the duties they perform and has been a boost in terms of team building. Despite their many years of experience both Michael and John felt they had benefited from the course. We are very proud of their achievement."
